Liu Xizai (1813—1881) was born in Xinghua, Jiangsu. Daoguang Jinshi Guan went to Guangdong as a scholar ambassador and gave lectures at Shanghai Longmen Academy in his later years. He was a famous scholar, literary theorist and linguist in China in the late Qing Dynasty, and was called "Oriental Hegelian". He studied Confucian classics all his life and was proficient in phonology, including poems, words, songs and calligraphy.
