Gu Puguang began to investigate and study national folk art in the mid-1980s, and his research fields mainly focused on Nuo opera and mask culture. Personal life

Gu Puguang's research on Nuo opera and mask culture has a wide influence in academic circles, and his works have been widely commented and quoted by scholars at home and abroad. After The Mask History of China was published, more than 20 newspapers and periodicals published comments, including People's Daily, Literature and Art Newspaper, China Culture Newspaper, China Art Newspaper, China Book Review, Reading, Folklore Research (Korea), History and Folklore (Japan). This book has won the second prize of the 3rd China National Book Award, the second prize of the 4th Excellent Achievements in Social Sciences in Guizhou Province, and the 1996 Five One Project Award in Guizhou Province. The Complete Works of China Folk Art won the Five One Project Award from the Propaganda Department of the CPC 1993; China Nuo Mask Art was nominated for the 3rd National Book Award.
