A China official who defected in Canada made his first public speech to the media, and made the same accusation as two China officials who defected in Australia, saying that China had a spy network abroad.

Australian and Guangzhou reporters reported from Toronto that Han Guangsheng decided to give up his post in the Ministry of Public Security of China when he visited Toronto in 20001,and then he applied for asylum in Canada. He said that China has a complex intelligence gathering network in western countries, which is responsible for collecting economic and scientific information of the target countries. He said that China is also very interested in the situation of Chinese communities in cities such as Toronto and Sydney.

Han Guangsheng said that China is particularly interested in Canada because it is closer to the United States.
