The school, formerly known as Fudan College, was founded in 1905. It is one of the earliest institutions of higher learning independently established by the people in China. 1952 after the adjustment of departments, the school has become a comprehensive university focusing on basic teaching and research of arts and sciences. In 2000, Fudan University merged with Shanghai Medical University, the fourth national medical college of Sun Yat-sen University founded by 1927, to form a new Fudan University.

The school has four campuses: Handan Campus, LAM Raymond Campus, Jiangwan Campus and Zhangjiang Campus, covering an area of about 2,439,200 square meters, with a school building area of 224 1 1.000 square meters.
