1967, kornberg graduated from Harvard University with a bachelor's degree, 1972, with a doctorate from Stanford University. I used to do postdoctoral research in the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the British Medical Research Council in Cambridge. Before becoming a professor at Stanford University, he taught in the Department of Biochemistry at Harvard Medical School.

Kornberg is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts.
