1966 graduated from Xi Institute of Military Telecommunication Engineering. After graduation, he worked in 10 research institutes such as the Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and Computing Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences, engaged in scientific research, and was one of the founders of New Technology Development Company of Computing Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences (predecessor of Lenovo Group). Hong Kong Lenovo was founded in 1988. 1997 Beijing Lenovo merged with Hong Kong Lenovo, and Liu Chuanzhi became the chairman of Lenovo Group.
In 2004, Liu Chuanzhi resigned as the chairman of Lenovo Group. In September 2009, Liu Chuanzhi was re-appointed as the chairman of Lenovo Group. 201112 Lenovo group announced that Liu Chuanzhi stepped down as chairman of the board of directors and became honorary chairman of Lenovo group. On 20 19 12 18, Legend Holdings announced the retirement of Chairman Liu Chuanzhi and Ning Min took over as Chairman of Legend Holdings.

Liu Gushu, the father of Liu Chuanzhi, founded a patent company in Hong Kong on 1984, and it is still the largest patent company in Hong Kong.
Liu Chuanzhi was sent to Baiteng Island and fell in love with his wife Gong Guoxing. They have a pair of children, a daughter named Liu Qing and a son named Liu Lin. Liu Qing was the managing director of the direct investment department of Goldman Sachs. On July 28th, 20 14, Liu Qing joined Didi Taxi as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and was later promoted to President of Didi Chuxing.
