Nathan Chen is a Chinese American. He was born and brought up in America. Nathan Chen can't speak Chinese as fluently as Gu Ailing. He basically speaks English. Nathan Chen's culture and education are Western-style, and he knows little about China culture.

Nathan Chen's early experience.

In 2002, Nathan Chen followed his parents to watch the figure skating competition in the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and became interested in ice sports. However, Nathan Chen's first game was not skating, but ice hockey. He often plays ice hockey with his two brothers. Nathan Chen's mother was afraid of his injury and asked him to switch to figure skating.

In 2003, Nathan Chen began to participate in figure skating competition. In the following years, he participated in competitions of all ages in the United States. In order to improve the level of figure skating, Nathan Chen also took part in ballet classes and dance dramas, such as Nutcracker, Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty.
