At the age of 25, he became a monk in Huiji Temple, Putuo Mountain, Zhejiang Province, and was admitted to the preparatory class of Putuo Mountain Buddhist College in the same year. At the age of 28, he was punished by Guanghua Temple in Putian, Fujian, and was admitted to the undergraduate class of China Buddhist College in Beijing for further study.
