Archaeology of Peking University
The Department of Archaeology in Peking University is the earliest archaeological department established in universities in China, with a history of 50 years. In the 1920s, modern archaeology marked by field archaeology was introduced into China. Peking University, the pioneer of Chinese culture, set up an archaeological research room with Mr. Ma Heng as the director in Sinology (later renamed the College of Literature) on 1922, and hired Luo Zhenyu and Peliot as the archaeological exchange instructors.
1934, Mr. Ma Heng became the director of the Palace Museum and Mr. Hu Shi became the director of the Archaeological Office. 1946, Peking University returned to Beijing after eight years of southward migration due to Japanese invasion of China. He established the Antique Arrangement Room of the College of Literature with Mr. Xiang Da as the director, hired Mr. Liang Siyong and Mr. Pei Wenzhong as tutors, and began to recruit graduate students in archaeology.
Archaeology, as a national key discipline in this field, has a group of experts and academic leaders who enjoy high prestige in archaeological circles at home and abroad. The level of archaeological teaching and scientific research is in a leading position in China and has great influence in the world. It is known as "the cradle of archaeologists in China" and "the center of archaeological research in China".
