Last year, Zou Tao, a doctoral student at Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, was successfully employed by the Business School of the Australian National University (ANU), becoming the fifth student in Guanghua School of Management to directly obtain an overseas teaching position. Almost at the same time, Yao Jingjing, a doctoral student, also received a letter of appointment from Lille College of Science, Economics and Management.
After submitting application materials such as resume, research summary and teaching statement to Australian National University, Zou Tao received the employment notice from Australian National University after two days of interviews including introducing academic research, academic report, interview and answering questions. "Unbelievable" was his first feeling. Because it is not only the first-class university ranked 19 in QS World University Rankings, but also the alma mater of his tutor Professor Chen Song.
As the first author, he reported his research results at a large number of international academic conferences, such as the annual meeting of American statistics and the annual meeting of international probability statistics, published academic papers in internationally renowned journals, exchanged experiences in Canadian and American universities, and worked as an assistant professor of undergraduate, master's, doctoral, MBA, international MBA and EMBA, all of which may be the "stepping stone" for Zou Tao to obtain the teaching position in Australian national universities.
"It is not easy for us to get overseas teaching positions with the help of locally trained management doctors. Because teaching is different from other professions, it requires very high academic level. " Gong Liutang, deputy dean of Guanghua School of Management, Peking University, said.
"In the past 30 years, China's business education has undergone radical changes, which complement China's economic development. However, compared with subjects that started earlier, such as mathematics, physics and chemistry, business education in China has been far from the international level for a long time. " Gong Liutang attributed this gap to the economic environment of business school education and the development of the discipline itself. "After all, since the reform and opening up, China's rapid economic development has only been more than 30 years, and the development of domestic business disciplines has only been more than 30 years."
Since Zeng Yuping, the first doctoral student of Guanghua School of Management, took a post at Southern Illinois University in 2008, almost every year, doctoral graduates of Guanghua School of Management have been employed to teach overseas. The transformation from introducing doctors from overseas to exporting domestically trained management doctors to overseas academic circles is quietly taking place by the unnamed lake.
In the past, due to the stage of China's economic development, business education started late and always focused on education. At that time, the domestic business teaching system, research system, training methods, language exchange methods, etc. It is impossible to connect with overseas, and naturally it is impossible to engage in academic dialogue with the international community.
"The college is strongly aware of the huge gap between domestic business education and international level, so it began to reform." Gong Liutang said that the reform of Guanghua School of Management had a clear goal from the beginning, that is, to strive to achieve international integration of the training system. The college has carried out drastic curriculum reform; Gradually improve the doctoral selection mechanism and postgraduate curriculum system, cancel the doctoral tutor enrollment system, and recruit students in accordance with the professional direction; Set up an IPHD program (international doctor) to teach in English, and train business school researchers and senior teaching staff.
In Gong Liutang's memory, two things shocked the reform: one was to stop recruiting in-service doctoral students across the board, and the other was to deprive the tutor of the right to enroll students. "It is a guiding opinion to stop recruiting in-service doctoral students, mainly to ensure the quality of doctoral training. The second reform is to cancel the doctoral tutor enrollment system, not to let tutors choose, but to enroll students according to their majors. In the later stage, the full doctoral tutor system was successfully introduced, allowing students to choose their ideal tutor from more than 0/00 teachers in the college/KLOC. "
In 20 12, Guanghua school of management took the lead in implementing the "application-examination system" for doctoral enrollment in China, and gradually changed from the examination-oriented selection mechanism to the application-examination mechanism, and examined students' comprehensive quality from academic background, professional quality, scientific research skills, foreign language level, thinking ability and innovation ability.
In the process of many international-oriented reforms, Guanghua School of Management has gradually seen the dawn of internationalization, whether it is to start doctoral students to participate in international academic conference projects, to fund doctoral students to carry out international academic exchange activities, or to set up a "long-term overseas funding for doctoral students" project to fund outstanding academic graduate students to go to Stanford University, Yale University and other world-class universities for exchange study and research every year.
"At present, about 50% of the doctoral students in the college can study in famous foreign universities for one year, which can give foreign universities' visibility' to China students and let them really understand the research level of China students. This kind of' popularity' is very helpful for students to apply for overseas institutions. " Xu Jing, a professor at Guanghua School of Management, said that many students cooperated with famous professors during the exchange period to complete high-quality doctoral research and thesis writing, which was recognized by overseas scholars.
Gong Liutang predicted that with the continuous development of China's economy, the world's attention to China will be further enhanced, and more and more China-based business management doctors will "go out". Business education in China should not only measure academic research by international standards, but also closely grasp the economic development trend of China and combine research with local management practice, which provides a great space for us to conduct characteristic research in international academic circles.
