John basilone, an Italian immigrant, grew up with nine brothers and sisters on the Laritan River in New Jersey. 1934, 18-year-old Basilong was drafted into the army and spent three years in the Philippines. He is a famous boxing champion there. Shortly after returning from the army, he signed up for the Marine Corps at 1940 and was assigned to 1 7th Division1Battalion C Company as a gunner. Later, he was assigned to the 27 th Regiment of the 5 th Division 1 Battalion Company B. Private first class Joe B. sledge came from a wealthy family in Mobile, Alabama. His ancestors participated in the Civil War and contributed to the failure of the Confederacy. His father served as a field medical officer in World War I and became a doctor after retiring. When the United States declared war on Japan, it happened to be a month before sledge's 18th birthday. He also wanted to sign up for the army, but his congenital heart disease prevented him from doing so. It was not until 1942 that he managed to join the Marine Corps. Although his family wanted him to be an officer (and they could do it), he insisted on going to the front to fight. He was assigned to K Company, 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment of 1 Division as a mortar hand.
