Central South University has such schools as School of Literature and Journalism, School of Foreign Languages, School of Architecture and Art, School of Business, School of Law, School of Marxism, School of Public Administration, School of Mathematics and Statistics, School of Physics and Electronics, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.

Central South University is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education. On April 29th, 2000, it was formed by the merger of Hunan Medical University, Changsha Railway Institute and Central South University of Technology. The former Central South University of Technology was founded in 1952, and 1960 was identified as a national key university. /kloc-0 passed the project evaluation in 1996 and entered the ranks of "21/project"./kloc-0 was transferred from China Nonferrous Metals Industry Corporation to the Ministry of Education in 1998. Hunan Medical University, formerly known as Xiangya Medical University, was founded in 19 14. It is one of the earliest western medicine institutions of higher learning in China, enjoying the reputation of "Xiangya in the south and Concord in the north". 1996 passed the pre-examination of "Project 2 1 1", which was divided into provinces. Changsha Railway Institute, formerly known as Central South Institute of Architecture and Civil Engineering, was founded in 1953 during the national adjustment of departments. Based on the three established departments and some teaching and research offices of 1960, another campus is set up, which belongs to the Ministry of Railways.
