Donghua University
China Textile University, with the word "China", is a typical national prefix. Due to the recession of textile industry and the surge of college merger in the 1990s, this university has two goals to achieve.
One is to shed its own "textile" characteristics and transform into a comprehensive university to improve the quality of students. Secondly, in the selection of "985" and "2 1 1" projects, we should strive for the first opportunity.
In this way, renaming became a top priority for the school, so the school leaders acted quickly.
Legend has it that the school reported three names to the competent authorities at that time, including "East China University" and "Donghua University". However, the name of Donghua University was too big to be approved, and the name of Donghua University was finally used.
Donghua University
Because things were handled very quickly and opinions were not widely solicited, teachers, students and former alumni were caught off guard and said they didn't know their school.
It is rumored that Donghua coincides with the entrance of textiles into and out of the Forbidden City-Donghuamen. However, we can't ignore that Donghuamen is also the entrance to the city after the death of the emperor, also known as "the gate of hell".
Before it was renamed, the school was the only university in Shanghai that took "China" as its name. After changing its name, it gloriously joined the ranks of the four "private universities" (Chang 'an University, Jiangnan University and Hohai University), which means that it is easy to be misunderstood as private universities.
Donghua University
Donghua University's textile industry is still the first in China and world-famous. In the fourth round of discipline evaluation of the Ministry of Education, textile science and engineering ranked A+, materials science and engineering and design science ranked B+, mechanical engineering, control science and engineering, environmental science and engineering, management science and engineering, business administration ranked B, chemistry, computer science and technology, and software engineering ranked B-.
Renaming is a thing of the past. You know, up to now, when many Donghua alumni are asked about their graduation institutions, they will still say, "I graduated from Donghua University, the former China Textile University."
