The school's predecessor was Beijing Institute of Machinery, which was founded in 1958 and Shaanxi University of Technology in 1960. 1972, Beijing Institute of Machinery and Shaanxi University of Technology merged to form Shaanxi Institute of Machinery, which was affiliated to the First Ministry of Machinery Industry. 1994, the school was renamed as Xi University of Technology with approval. 1998 The school was placed in Shaanxi Province, and the management system was adjusted to be jointly built by the central government and Shaanxi Province, with Shaanxi Province as the main management.
