1910 One day in September, the American cruise ship "empress of china" set sail in Wusong Port, and the ship was crowded with a group of China students studying abroad at public expense.

"Hey, isn't this Hu Hong?" "Hey, Zhu Kezhen, why aren't you dead?"

"Thanks to you, you were sincerely saying that I wouldn't live to be 20 years old. I am a natural weakness and can't exercise every day. Now that I am over 20 years old, I will live longer than you! "

"So what? Look at this state, you will definitely not live to be 60 years old! "

Two years later, the two met and, like enemies, naively started gambling.

"Hu Hong, what would you do if I was over 60 and lived longer than you?"

"I don't believe it! Zhu Kezhen, if you live to be 60, I will knock you on the head three times on your 60th birthday. If you live longer than me, you can kick my dead ass. "

"All right. You must remember what you said today! "

The man who was "short-lived warning" by Hu Shi is called Zhu Kezhen, a man who is realistic and keeps his promise. Like Hu Shi, he is also a legend.

He has made many achievements in his life. He was the founder of many scientific fields in China and helped Zhejiang University become the "Oriental Cambridge". The "Zhu Kezhen Spirit" formed in Zhejiang University is the concise spirit of his life, and it is also the spirit that students and rising scientific talents yearn for.

Loyal and unyielding patriotism and a sense of responsibility for the world.

Zhu Kezhen, 1890, a native of Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, ranked sixth in this grain merchant family and was named Zhao Xiong. Mr Xue studied at the age of five, determined to become a pillar of the country in the future, so he suggested taking the meaning of "truth" as the important task and changing his name to Zhu Kezhen.

He died in 1974. Looking back on Zhu Kezhen's life, he experienced national turmoil and social vicissitudes in 84 years. He has always maintained the original intention of rejuvenating China, rejuvenating the country through science and technology, and strengthening the country through education, and even forward-looking thinking on the concept of sustainable development. Every step is drummed, and every step is guided by the patriotic spirit of taking the world as its own responsibility.

Because of the closed-door policy of the Qing Dynasty, modern China woke up as if it were a lifetime ago, and the four great inventions that it used to be proud of had already been introduced. Zhu Kezhen believes that science can awaken people's consciousness and enhance national strength.

He devoted himself to it, from his childhood study to middle school, university, studying abroad, and then to 19 18, after graduating from Harvard University, he returned to China to teach. He gradually explored and formed, and became the founder of modern geography, meteorology and phenology in China. He had a profound study on the history of geography and natural science, and had a far-reaching impact on agriculture, forestry, animal husbandry and by-products fishing in China.

Besides science, he also saw the importance of education. He said: "The purpose of university education is to cultivate a country's leading talents."

On the one hand, he attached great importance to teachers, did not stick to stereotypes, and made an exception to recruit and promote many teachers. On the other hand, in 13, together with people from Zhejiang University, he personally transformed this ordinary local university into a world-famous "Oriental Cambridge". For the teachers and students of Zhejiang University at that time, he was a spiritual pillar, and he sacrificed a lot for it.

When he moved to school for the third time, his wife, Zhang Xiahui, and his son, Zhu Heng, contracted malaria and fell down one after another, losing their son and wife in less than half a month.

Because of the complexity of transfer, he didn't even go home to see his son for the last time. We can't imagine the pain and regret. However, even though he suffered such a heavy blow, he never recovered. He never even showed his pain in front of outsiders, but silently shed tears and missed him in the dead of night.

Zhu Kezhen is not heartless to his wife and children, but the motherland needs him. In the face of the great righteousness of the country and the nation, he can only bury his personal feelings in his heart, shoulder the heavy burden bravely and go forward bravely.

The scientific spirit of not asking right and wrong, not asking interests.

Zhu Kezhen's titles are endless, but the first one was a scientist. He always treats science with the most rigorous and realistic attitude. He once said: "In scientific research, we can't use words like' probably' and' possibly', and we can't use estimation and inference instead of observation."

As a scientist, he made painstaking research and practice in the blank fields of modern China, especially in the fields of meteorological science and geographical science. He founded the Institute of Meteorology of Academia Sinica, established the early meteorological observation network in China, and offered meteorological training courses. All these laid the foundation for modern meteorology and geography in China.

Not only that, he himself has done a lot of research and published many papers in the history of astronomy, meteorology, general history of science, historical seismology and historical climatology. He has many works in his life. If you don't count the diary of 8 million words, his life is about 3 million words.

Zhu Kezhen showed this spirit of asking only right and wrong, without asking about interests, which shows that he shines brilliantly in the field of scientific research. At the same time, he also extended this scientific spirit to his work and life. He will always do it himself in the front line, regardless of secular shackles, appoint people on their merits, and will surely make great achievements.

Not much, the spirit of openness.

There is a saying that "the more you look, the bigger the world is". Zhu Kezhen's study career is long, and he dabbles in a wide range. With a multi-disciplinary background, he really won the hearts of the people with a broad mind and became a dreamer of "sustainable thinking".

When he was the president of Zhejiang University, what impressed him most was that he attached importance to teachers and tolerated others. When the famous mathematician Su talked about Zhu Kezhen, he always said gratefully, "President Zhu regards our professor as a treasure!"

He will be hired as a teacher of Zhejiang University because he has learned a lot. Only Cha Changsheng with high school education is like this. You know, education is an almost insurmountable threshold for teachers.

He also cares about professors who are contradictory but have both ability and political integrity. For example, Gong Fei once satirized him in public, but he still pushed Gong Fei to be the subject director, even though Gong Fei's non-party member status could not pass the regulations of the Ministry of Education.

Tolerance, harmony with people, harmony with nature.

Because his research field is mainly in nature, he also noticed the population, resources and environment problems in China very early. He always pays attention to starting from a scientific point of view, not only paying attention to the related topics of sustainable development in theory, but also doing everything in practice. Some of his theories even became the early exploration of China's concept of "sustainable development".

Self-improvement and indomitable spirit of struggle.

Zhu Kezhen has made such great achievements in the fields of science and education. Talent is one thing, but it is inseparable from his personal efforts and tenacious perseverance.

In terms of physical exercise, it is precisely because of his personal self-discipline that he lived from a person who was said to be sick or even short-lived by Hu Shi to an octogenarian. Keep exercising, swimming, doing exercises, boxing and so on for decades. In this changeable world, health is probably the real capital.

Zhu Kezhen also has a particularly famous "work" which is his diary. Since studying at Harvard, he has developed the habit of keeping a diary. However, due to the war, the diary from 1936 to 1974 only on February 6th, * * * is 38 years and 37 days, about 8 million words.

The contents of the diary are all-encompassing, which provides rich and detailed first-hand information for different disciplines in China, such as climatology, geography and education, and even has great value for the study of the history of modern science in China, especially the history of China Academy of Sciences.

Zhu Kezhen's four spirits, patriotism, are like lighthouses, guiding him to the goal he wants to reach; Scientific spirit is like a footprint, which is the mark he left when he ran to the finish line, and also the way he measured it; The spirit of openness is like an enthusiastic pedestrian, allowing him to accept different ideas and help on the road; The spirit of struggle is like a perpetual motion machine, which supplies itself all the way and supports itself to reach its destination.

In this society, each of us has our own role and occupation. Scientists' light and heat are in science and technology, educators' strength is in the classroom, and our strength is in these roles, waiting for us to develop. Born in a peaceful country, how lucky we are, we just need to stick to our posts and go forward bravely!
