The school was founded in 195 1, formerly known as Southern Sichuan Medical College. 1959 was upgraded to Luzhou Medical College, 1978 was upgraded to an undergraduate college, and it was renamed as Luzhou Medical College on 20 15.
1982 granted the right to confer bachelor's degrees, and 1993 became the unit to confer master's degrees. 200 1 began to jointly train doctors, and began to carry out undergraduate education for studying abroad in 2004. 20 10 approved the establishment of postdoctoral research center, and 20 15 changed its name to southwest medical university.
The school is a unit that recommends excellent undergraduate graduates to study for master's degree without examination. It is a model school for running schools according to law in Sichuan Province, a civilized campus in Sichuan Province, and a model school for education informatization in Sichuan Province. 20 14 schools were included in the project construction plan of newly-added doctoral degree awarding units in Sichuan province, and 20 16 schools were included in the project construction units.
Southwest Medical University covers an area of 20 1 1 mu, with 20 164 undergraduates, graduate students and international students, and 47 full-time teachers, including 5 16 senior titles, 475 doctors and doctoral students.
