Fudan University is one of the earliest universities in China to develop optics and laser science and technology. The predecessor of the Department of Optical Science and Engineering is the solid-state luminescence and spectroscopy laboratory founded by Professor Zhou Tongqing, a famous optical expert in China, in 1952. On this basis, 1953 formally established the optical teaching and research group. 1953 successfully developed the first X-ray tube in China, and 1963 successfully developed the first He-Ne laser in domestic universities. 1970 established the optical department and optical factory, which was later renamed the laser physics laboratory. The doctoral program of "Optics" was established in 1984 and has been listed as a national key discipline since 1988. 1992, the doctor's degree in optics passed the evaluation of the state education commission, ranking first in the national universities. In 2000, the Laser Physics Laboratory was merged into the School of Information Science and Engineering, and the Department of Optical Science and Engineering was established. In 2003, a master's degree program in optical engineering was established, and a doctoral degree program in optical engineering was established in 20 1 1 year. The research base also includes Shanghai Ultra-precision Optical Manufacturing Engineering Technology Research Center of Fudan University and Key Laboratory of Micro-nano Photonic Structure of Ministry of Education.

The development of optics and optical engineering in Fudan University keeps up with the forefront of international science and actively faces the needs of national industry and national defense development. At present, the research mainly focuses on the following four research directions: optical engineering, optical information science and technology, new photovoltaic devices and materials, and photobiomedicine. The Department of Communication Science and Engineering was established in May 2000. At present, there are 4 professors (including distinguished professor 1 and 2 tutors), 6 associate professors, and young teachers account for more than 50%.

The Department of Communication Science and Engineering has Fudan-Lucent Bell Information Science and Technology Joint Laboratory, Fudan-Intel Multimedia Communication Technology Center, Fudan -TI DSPS Laboratory and Fudan-Shanghai Institute of Posts and Telecommunications Engineering.
