The Development Course of Earth Science Department of Sun Yat-sen University
1925 After the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the National Government issued an order to rename the National Guangdong University as the National Sun Yat-sen University.

From 65438 to 0926, Professor Huang, the first head of the Department of Geology, wrote Minerals of China, which was published by the Commercial Press. This is one of the earliest works on mineralogy, petrology and mineral deposits in China.

During the period of 1927, Xie, Zhu Jiahua and others initiated the National Revolutionary Government to set up the Guangdong-Guangxi Geological Survey Institute, which enjoyed a high reputation in the history of geological research and investigation in China and created a precedent for China people to conduct geological surveys in Guangdong and Guangxi. The first edition of geological map and mineral map of Guangdong and Guangxi was one of the four most influential geological surveys in China at that time. The Institute is affiliated to the Department of Geology of Sun Yat-sen University, and all previous department heads are concurrently directors. At the same time, the researchers of Guangdong and Guangxi Geological Survey also serve as educators in the Department of Geology.

1952, the Department of Geology of Sun Yat-sen University moved to Changsha to set up the Central South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (now Central South University), and later belonged to Changsha Institute of Geotectonics of China Academy of Sciences (now merged into Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry of China Academy of Sciences).

1956, the former head of the Department of Geology of Sun Yat-sen University (at 1944- 1945, 1950- 1952) and Academician Chen, a graduate of the Department of Geology of Sun Yat-sen University, put forward a new geotectonic theory-diwa theory (activation)

1958, Sun Yat-sen University resumed its five-year geological education.

1972, Sun Yat-sen University resumed its geology major again. 1979 enrolls postgraduates majoring in structural geology, 1984 enrolls postgraduates majoring in mineral deposit science and stratigraphic paleontology, and the State Education Commission entrusts them to go abroad to train postgraduates. In 1984 and 1985, structural geology and mineral deposit science have successively become master's degree awarding points. In 2000, master's degree awarding points in Quaternary geology and geotechnical engineering and doctoral degree awarding points in mineralogy, petrology and mineral deposits were established. In 2004, a master's degree program in geological engineering was established. In 2005, the undergraduate major of geo-information science and technology was set up. 20 1 1, the undergraduate major of geological engineering was established. 20 10 was authorized by the first-class discipline of geology, including mineralogy, petrology, mineral deposit science, structural geology, quaternary geology and geochemistry. Mineralogy, petrology and deposit science are two key disciplines in Guangdong Province.

In 2002, the Department of Earth Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University established the disciplines of geochemistry, gemmology and mineral materials, land and coastal environmental change, geo-information engineering and geotechnical engineering, which endowed them with dual functions of education, teaching and scientific research. At present, there are Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Geological Action and Mineral Resources Exploration, Research Center of Earth Environment and Earth Resources, Institute of Granite and Uranium Resources of Guangdong University, Quaternary Environmental Research Center, Gemstone Research Appraisal (Evaluation) Center, Gemstone Mineral Materials Research Institute, Geotechnical Engineering Research Institute, Geology and Mineral Museum, Earth Science Experimental Teaching Center and other institutions. After decades of development, the Department of Earth Sciences of Sun Yat-sen University has distinctive features in the fields of experimental geochemistry of mineralization and geochemistry of ore-forming fluids, research on Quaternary environment and global change, theory of in-situ remelting of granite and crustal convection and its application in the law of uranium mineralization, research on geological disasters and mine environmental pollution in South China, research on geological engineering in South China, and investigation and research on Cenozoic geology and active structures.

The geological education of Sun Yat-sen University has long been adhering to the motto of "erudition, interrogation, deliberation, discernment and perseverance" formulated by Dr. Sun Yat-sen, and inheriting the fine tradition of geological survey in Guangdong and Guangxi. The concept of running a school embodies the Lingnan characteristics of "openness, inclusiveness, pragmatism and innovation", and the theoretical teaching and practical teaching are closely combined, and the ability of geological experiment, practice and practical operation is highly valued. Be diligent in thinking, be brave in innovation, be rigorous and realistic, study hard, attach importance to absorbing the essence of adjacent disciplines, and constantly explore new fields of geology.
