Tsinghua University Department of Precision Instruments and Machinery was founded in 1984. Its predecessor was the Mechanical Department of Tsinghua University Institute of Technology, which was established in 1932. In 1950s, it was reorganized into Tsinghua University Machinery Manufacturing Department, and in the early 1960s, it was reorganized into Precision Instruments and Machinery Department. In 1980s, it was renamed as the current Department of Precision Instruments and Machinery. In recent years, with the development of new technologies such as microelectronics, computer, automatic control, laser and modern mechanical design, modern manufacturing engineering, modern control and information theory, our department has continuously broken through traditional fields and updated teaching content to meet the needs of world scientific and technological development and national economic construction, and gradually formed an interdisciplinary feature of combining machinery, light and electricity.
