Tsinghua University Department of Precision Instruments and Machinery was founded in 1984. Its predecessor was the Mechanical Department of Tsinghua University Institute of Technology, which was established in 1932. In 1950s, it was reorganized into Tsinghua University Machinery Manufacturing Department, and in the early 1960s, it was reorganized into Precision Instruments and Machinery Department. In 1980s, it was renamed as the current Department of Precision Instruments and Machinery.
