Johns Hopkins University is the first research university in the United States and even in the Western Hemisphere. 1873, when John Hopkins, a banker and Quaker in Baltimore, Maryland, died, he left a huge legacy worth $7 million (equivalent to1600 million in 2006 in terms of purchasing power).
