The School of Chemistry of Huazhong Normal University, formerly known as the Department of Chemistry of Huazhong University, was established in 1929. The famous chemist Mr. Zhang Zijun is the head of the Department of Chemistry (1931-1941). The current Institute of Chemistry was established in 2002 on the basis of integrating the Department of Chemistry, the Institute of Pesticide Chemistry and the Analysis and Testing Center, with Professor Yang Guangfu, winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, as the president.
