Day 1 day
/Opening speech/
Mr. Gu Laifeng, Dean of Chuanghehui Business School and Chuanghehuiyun University, first made an opening speech for this forum. Dean Gu pointed out that one of the missions of establishing a new business school is to tear down the walls of universities, reshape business education and let knowledge flow. We hope that through unremitting efforts, we can empower more innovative entrepreneurs, enhance their abilities and broaden their horizons, thus helping China to innovate. Based on this, we have established cooperation with many top universities at home and abroad, not only strengthened academic exchanges, but also built teaching centers, and introduced excellent foreign business school degree programs, including business school netherlands MBA program, Shenandoah University MBA program, and HEC Liege EDBA program of Belgian University of Liege.
Finally, I hope the forum can add warmth and confidence to everyone in this unusually cold winter!
/Innovation is unpredictable/
Zhang, co-founder and professor of National Development Research Institute of Peking University, said that innovation is unpredictable. Because innovation is something we have never done, past data can't tell us the right and wrong of the future.
Professor Zhang pointed out that entrepreneurial decision-making is not entirely based on scientific decision-making. We generally think that scientific decision-making is the greatest, but scientific decision-making is based on data and calculation. Given the data, the answer is unique as long as the calculation method is not wrong. The decision-making of entrepreneurs is different from data and calculation, but based on imagination, intuition and judgment, so different people draw different conclusions with the same data. Therefore, the decision-making of entrepreneurs is not learned. What most people agree with can't be called innovation, only what a few people agree with can be called innovation, so there is no standard answer for entrepreneurs' decision-making. If this is confused, completely replacing entrepreneurial decision with scientific decision may hinder innovation.
/The future of artificial intelligence
Huang Tiejun, a doctor of artificial intelligence at Huazhong University of Science and Technology and a professor of eecs, said that it is actually very difficult to predict the future of artificial intelligence by reviewing its development history, but in essence, intelligence is a function and a phenomenon. Then the future we really want to predict depends not only on intelligence itself, but also on the changes of the machine carrier on which intelligence depends. This change will bring about fundamental changes, which are also the most important basis for us to predict the future.
If we want to see 10 year, 20 years or even longer, it depends on what the future intelligent system will do in essence. I think the basic task of the future intelligent system is actually to explore in the natural environment and developed environment, face realistic challenges and solve problems. Just like we want to explore in a complex environment and then solve the problem.
/The Evolution of Industry-University-Research at Cambridge University/
Professor Brain Corbett, CEO of the Derivative Technology Company of Cambridge University and head of the international expansion plan of the Technology Transfer Office of Cambridge University, shared how Cambridge's ecosystem supports innovation and the road of technology commercialization of Cambridge University.
Professor Brian Corbett said that in the past few years, Cambridge University has become the third largest university innovation ecosystem in the world. So, what is the secret of the success of Cambridge University?
It also has a great influence through scientific research. The influence of scientific research is provided through the commercialization of products or technologies. Through our research process, we can establish good contact with end consumers and let them enjoy the latest scientific products.
Moderator: Ask Dr. Deng. In fact, the Science Park of Peking University is similar to that of Cambridge, both of which rely heavily on the north and have a lot of Industry-University-Research resources. Please introduce the current development and achievements.
Deng: We are the Science Park in Peking University. Our basic talents are more from universities and scientific research institutions. Most of us come from universities such as Peking University to find some entrepreneurial teams to come to our park. At present, there are more than 60 entrepreneurial teams in our park, about one third of which are from other universities such as Peking University, Tsinghua and Harbin Institute of Technology, and 15 team is from abroad. We have graduated from 45 enterprises now. What does graduation mean? Domestic concept graduation is to get the national high-tech enterprise certification.
So generally speaking, we welcome cooperation with university scientific research institutions, including international cooperation. At present, we have established cooperative relations with Canada and Germany.
the next day
/innovation management in the era of change/
Zheng Gang, deputy director and professor of the Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy, School of Management, Zhejiang University, shared three innovation principles in the era of change.
The first rule, what should we do in this era of change? My suggestion is to establish a comprehensive concept of innovation, that is to say, innovation is not only a purely technical issue, but also includes business model, market, culture, organizational structure and so on, which can create value for the company through innovation.
The second rule is how to take action in the era of VUCA change. My suggestion is a lean strategy, which can run in small steps and iterate quickly.
The third rule, what should be done in organizational form? My suggestion is how to establish a dual organization of "one enterprise, two systems". What is a dual organization? On the one hand, we must ensure that the first curve of the existing main business is getting better and better, on the other hand, we must cultivate and lay out the second curve in advance, which is the future growth point.
/Two-cycle-driven investment logic/
Lu Jiaqing, a partner of Guo Kejiahe Investment Management Co., Ltd. and former executive deputy general manager of China Telecom Tianyi Venture Capital, said that the basic investment logic of dual-cycle drive lies in, for example, looking at the field of "new infrastructure" or looking at the big logic of TMT field during the 14 th Five-Year Plan period, which can be divided into two categories:
First, the so-called technical card position. For example, our country's big chips, such as Tengfei, Godson, Guang Hai and so on. You have one of them, and obviously you have your place on both the desktop and the server. This is typical card logic.
Second, the location of the business card. We also see some business logic called business card slot, such as information security. The typical information security track is the fragmentation track, which has double-digit growth in many fields, including industrial security and data security. However, there are only a few billion segments in any of them, and the entire market capacity is not large. We will find that, first of all, you have to have a business card position on the subdivision track, and then you have to grow rapidly horizontally and become a very big company.
/Cambridge Business Innovation and Incubator Development/
Alex Smeets, Ph.D. in Materials Science at Cambridge University and Executive Director of St. John's Innovation Center in Cambridge Science Park, said that there is no uniform definition of science parks, accelerators and incubators, and everything depends on how we operate these parks or incubators. There are some large accelerators that do not provide facilities to focus on offline or hardware. Sometimes we will provide some office space or desks and other facilities.
The first such accelerator at Cambridge University is called the Imaginary Space Entrepreneur Accelerator. The purpose of this accelerator is to improve the lives of millions of people, that is, to better improve people's lives through these startups that have settled in this accelerator. Therefore, we also provide a series of software and hardware facilities, including * * * enjoying office space, entrepreneurial community resources, docking successful enterprises and investors, and providing some on-site consultation.
The second accelerator was established at 20 12. This accelerator has some teaching tasks, as well as some training and counseling programs for entrepreneurs. This accelerator is operated by the business school.
There is also an incubator and * * * Innovation Center called Barclays Eagle Lab Incubator * * Innovation Space, which was established after 2007 and 2008. The country is eager to rebuild the credibility of the financial and banking sectors, so this incubator and innovation space provide some private office and meeting space.
/cryptocurrency and blockchain/
Garrick Hileman, a doctoral student at the London School of Economics and Political Science and a researcher at the Cambridge Center for Alternative Finance and Macroeconomics, said that the founder of a blockchain startup once said that blockchain can help us turn a world that we don't want to be evil into a world that we can't be evil. Because now there is a blockchain, there will be no malicious behavior such as data tampering or theft. Because blockchain is a decentralized technology, it can do many things. Besides digital currency, we can also make smart contracts, which is a software running on blockchain technology, and some smart contracts can be reached on this platform.
Garrick Hillemann also talked about some common misunderstandings about blockchain. He said:
The blockchain has been very hot by everyone at present. The first misunderstanding is that the blockchain does not need trust. But in fact, the blockchain needs a certain degree of trust. Digital currency is either automatic or secure. It is not 100% secure. If it is not automatic, the blockchain is more secure than other systems.
The second misunderstanding is that the blockchain is tamper-proof or eternal. But this is not correct. In fact, our transaction can be reversed, and it can be reversed under some specific circumstances, and it is not always tamper-proof. But it can prevent tampering to a great extent, because it is decentralized, and the technical architecture based on it is difficult to tamper artificially, but it is not completely tamper-proof.
/Algorithm Games and Computer Social Choice/
Edith Elkind, Ph.D. at Princeton University and professor of computer science at Oxford University, mainly shared the application of artificial intelligence in the field of security. She said that one of the challenges of security work is that security resources are very limited. For example, in airports, security guards cannot deploy enough manpower at every node. When protecting wild animals, we also face great challenges, depending on how the attackers are deployed. If the attackers don't observe our situation, our work will be easier, but this is not the case.
Because the attacker's attack is unpredictable, we can't predict their attack scheme, and the strategy can only be intelligent random distribution. Some targets may be more important to the attacker, but they are unpredictable and can only be randomly distributed to evaluate which target is more important to the attacker. This is where artificial intelligence can come into play. Artificial intelligence helps us decide how to deploy security guards and help us predict the target of attackers.
Roundtable forum
The Development Road of Sino-British Innovation Industrial Park
With the theme of "The Road to the Development of China-UK Innovation Industrial Park", Dr. Alex Smeets, Ph.D. in Materials Science of Cambridge University and Executive Director of St. John Innovation Center of Cambridge Science Park; Dr Edith Elkind, Professor of Computer Science Department of Princeton University; Mr. wang xiaoli, Director of National Incubation Alliance of China Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Association and Minister of International Science and Technology Cooperation Department of China Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Association; Mr. Zheng Gang, deputy director and professor of the Department of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Strategy, School of Management, Zhejiang University, attended the roundtable forum.
Moderator: First of all, I would like to invite Secretary-General Wang to talk about it from the perspective of China. If it is necessary to cooperate with overseas science parks, what are the development directions?
Wang xiaoli: We have carried out a lot of cooperation at home and abroad. In terms of park services, we are helping domestic parks to set up overseas innovation centers or offshore incubators. Today, due to the impact of the epidemic, the original offline communication mode has temporarily stopped, and now more ways and means of international cooperation are being explored.
In terms of the park, one is to set up overseas innovation resource centers, and the other is to organize related innovation and entrepreneurship activities, including various competitions. We are also providing corresponding professional services for two-way incubation enterprises, including company registration, policy application, overseas compliance, product trade, overseas investment and financing, overseas recruitment, overseas large-scale exhibitions, overseas presentations and so on.
At the enterprise level, the first is to help domestic enterprises establish overseas R&D centers and overseas laboratories, help domestic enterprises find technical partners, expand overseas markets and develop globally. The second is to help enterprises in cooperative countries to incubate projects and speed up roadshow services. This is what we do in international cooperation. In addition, we also want to discuss with the British side the establishment of overseas investment funds, recommend high-quality projects to the other side, undertake the responsibility of assisting post-investment management, and share the investment income of the funds.
Moderator: Dr. Alex, please share the cooperation opportunities between China and Britain in incubators and science parks.
Alex Smeets: The cooperation with China incubators and science parks is a very noteworthy area. There have been a series of successful cooperation activities in the past, and we are constantly exploring and learning how to cooperate better.
Now when it comes to cooperation opportunities, there have been some challenges in the past. In different countries, the management and operation of science parks are different. The science park and incubator of Cambridge University operate in a very commercial way. Few science parks and incubators are funded by the government and are basically completely commercialized. In other words, an owner makes a profit through leasing, and incubators and science parks will not join the company's operation too deeply. Many companies have found us, so the company needs it.
If they find us, we will help them as much as possible, which is different from other science parks in the world. In some countries, science parks and incubators will have certain management and control over the business operations of the settled companies. We just give them advice and guidance. If they need any support, they will come to us, but we will not take the initiative to interfere in the operation of their company.
Moderator: Excuse me, Professor Zheng, as far as the present situation of China is concerned, what role and function can science parks play in the national innovation strategy?
Zheng Gang: Science and technology parks play a very important role in regional development. In the past 40-60 years, the science park has proved its importance. Universities have always played a very important role in science parks. The talents of Silicon Valley enterprises are all from Stanford. Stanford University has provided many valuable talents for the Science Park, and the Science Park needs different strategies in different regions in terms of innovation.
For example, how to make the scientific research achievements of colleges and universities better realize commercial transformation? How to make better use of talents' entrepreneurial spirit? There are also bottom-level design and well-known alumni resources in universities. No matter for the region or the country, I think the science park is very important in innovation.
Moderator: Professor Edith, please share with us that there are many science parks in China, all of which are based on artificial intelligence. Is there a similar Internet Science Park in Britain? How can we better link computer technology with science parks?
Edith Elgin: As far as I know, there are some companies that combine artificial intelligence with biotechnology. We have some artificial intelligence companies, which are doing well in independent operation and using artificial intelligence technology. These enterprises will also do many different experiments in biotechnology, which will integrate a lot of artificial intelligence and biotechnology.
I also saw some teams in the university, and they combined the two very well. In the field of artificial intelligence, I think physical proximity is very important. There are also some science parks around Oxford University. There are many companies that do artificial intelligence and algorithms. We see that some companies are also very successful.
Through this forum, China and Britain have further confirmed that open innovation is the right direction. In the future, they will explore the Sino-British innovation technology cooperation system and two-way incubation cooperation mechanism, open their own innovation resources and incubation space, push each other's cooperation needs, cooperate to build joint laboratories and build offshore innovation centers. Jointly organize innovative and entrepreneurial activities to realize the exchange of innovative resources and the two-way incubation of scientific and technological projects; At the same time, it also provides professional service support for enterprises of the two countries to explore overseas markets, joint technology research and development, and overseas investment and financing. * * * Explore a new path of Sino-British cooperation in scientific and technological innovation and create a good environment for Sino-British scientific and technological innovation ecology!
