Southwest University, called Xida for short, is located in the mountain city of Chongqing. It is a university directly under the Ministry of Education of People's Republic of China (PRC), which is jointly established by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and Chongqing Municipality. The school is a "double-first-class" world-class discipline construction university, which ranks among the national "21project" and "985 engineering advantage discipline innovation platform" and is selected as "1/plan" and "20 1 plan". It is one of the seven free normal education universities in China, one of the pilot universities for independent selection and admission reform in China, one of the 60 cooperative universities for building high-level postgraduate programs in China, and one of the founding schools of Chongqing University Alliance.

Southwest University was formed by the merger of Southwest Normal University directly under the former Ministry of Education and Southwest Agricultural University directly under the former Ministry of Agriculture in 2005. The original two schools were built adjacent to each other and have the same origin, both of which can be traced back to the East Sichuan Normal School established in 1906. Several generations later, it was renamed Sichuan Education College on 1936. 1950, Sichuan Provincial Institute of Education merged with 1940 National Women's Teachers College and 1946 Private Xianghui College of Literature and Law to form Southwest Normal College and Southwest Agricultural College respectively. From 65438 to 0985, the two schools were renamed Southwest Normal University and Southwest Agricultural University respectively. Since then, Chongqing Light Industry Workers College, Sichuan Animal Husbandry and Veterinary College and Citrus Research Institute of China Academy of Agricultural Sciences have merged.
