The predecessor of Central South University of Forestry and Technology is Hunan Forestry College, which was founded in 1958. 1963, Hunan Forestry College moved from Changsha to Guangzhou under the cordial care of Tao Zhu, a proletarian revolutionary of the older generation, and merged with the Forestry Department of South China Agricultural College to form Central South Forestry College.
In 2005, the Ministry of Education officially approved the school to be renamed as Central South University of Forestry and Technology. In 2006, the former Hunan Economic Management Cadre College merged with Central South University of Forestry and Technology to form a new Central South University of Forestry and Technology.
