The school started from Jiangxi Public Medical College founded by192/kloc-0 and National Chung Cheng University founded by 1940. 1993, Jiangxi University and Jiangxi University of Science and Technology merged to form Nanchang University. 1997, the school is listed as 2 1 1 national key construction university of engineering. In 2004, the Ministry of Education signed an agreement with the Jiangxi Provincial People's Government to establish Nanchang University.
