1958 Lanzhou jiaotong university set up professional courses for cadres at the beginning of its establishment. 1960 set up higher correspondence education, which is one of the earlier universities with higher correspondence education qualifications in China. 1966 has nearly 900 correspondence students.

The school resumed higher correspondence education from 198 1 and began higher self-study examination from 1993. Through standardized management and strict control of teaching quality, the adult education in this school has entered the track of healthy and rapid development.

1996, the school has successively become the "Northwest Continuing Education Base of the Ministry of Railways" and the "Continuing Education Base of Professional and Technical Personnel in Gansu Province". 1997 in order to meet the needs of the development of adult education, the school formally established the College of Adult Education on the basis of the original Department of Adult Education, and in 2003 it was renamed the College of Continuing Education.
