Abstract: Improving students' comprehensive quality is one of the important tasks of colleges and universities, especially for English majors. Only by paying attention to the comprehensive quality of the basic stage can we lay a good foundation for future study and work.

The basic stage of English major is an important stage of English education, and the quality of students' learning in this stage directly affects their learning effect in the senior stage, so the teaching in the basic stage is particularly valued.

The syllabus for English majors clearly points out that English majors in Chinese universities should have solid basic skills, extensive knowledge, certain relevant professional knowledge, strong ability and high quality in the 2 1 century.

The improvement of students' comprehensive quality in the basic stage depends not only on comprehensive and strict basic training, but also on the cultivation of students' practical language ability, good style of study and correct learning methods, as well as on the cultivation of humanistic quality, innovative spirit and autonomous learning ability.

First, strengthen humanistic education and improve humanistic quality.

Humanistic quality refers to people's comprehensive quality in humanities. Humanistic quality includes four aspects: first, having humanistic knowledge. Humanistic knowledge is the basic knowledge of human beings in the field of humanities, such as historical knowledge, literary knowledge, political knowledge, legal knowledge, artistic knowledge, philosophical knowledge, religious knowledge, moral knowledge and language knowledge. Second, understand humanistic thought. Humanistic thought is the basic theory supporting humanistic knowledge and its internal logic. The core of humanistic thought is the basic cultural concept. Third, master humanistic methods. Humanistic method is the cognitive method and practical method contained in humanistic thought. Learning to think and solve problems in a humanistic way is an important aspect of humanistic quality. Fourth, follow the humanistic spirit. Humanistic spirit is the basis of the world outlook and values produced by humanistic thoughts and methods. Among the four aspects of humanistic quality, humanistic spirit is the core. Humanistic spirit is mainly manifested in dealing with the relationship between people, emphasizing mutual respect for each other's personal dignity and highlighting the principle of equality for all. Humanistic spirit is the true meaning of human culture or civilization, and the national spirit and the spirit of the times are fundamentally the concrete manifestations of humanistic spirit. The formation of humanistic quality mainly depends on the acquired humanistic education.

At present, the cultivation of humanistic quality of English majors in the basic stage is not satisfactory, and there is a phenomenon of emphasizing utility over humanities, which is not conducive to the improvement of students' comprehensive quality. Teachers are not sensitive enough to humanistic quality, so they can't explore humanistic thoughts in the content of teaching materials. Students only learn superficial vocabulary knowledge and language knowledge, and can't think deeply.

Professor He, a famous scholar, emphasized many times at the seminar on teaching and research of basic courses for English majors held in Shanghai in 2008. Pay equal attention to language ability and language literacy? It is the guarantee of improving language ability. This requires teachers to closely combine the content of teaching materials with social phenomena, solve the doubts in books with social reality, explain the problems in real society with book knowledge, and cultivate students into thinking learners, thus improving their comprehensive quality.

Second, create an innovative atmosphere and cultivate innovative spirit.

Innovative spirit is a special mental outlook and state shown by people in transforming society and scientific experiments, and it is an important symbol of people's subjective initiative in practice. To cultivate students' innovative spirit, we must first change teachers' teaching concepts and effectively implement classroom teaching methods. Teacher-oriented and student-centered? Create a relaxed environment and a harmonious and pleasant atmosphere for students. Let students feel that they are completely free in teaching activities and are indeed the masters of learning.

Providing students with learning methods is like giving them a key to open the door to knowledge. Only when students master the methods can they truly master the initiative of learning and become the main body of learning. Students' innovative spirit can only be cultivated in the process of independent exploration and problem solving. Some students are limited by knowledge, age, etc. Some are timid and dare not question, while others are content with a little knowledge and unwilling to question. Therefore, teachers should start from students' cognitive structure, leave enough space for students to explore, encourage students to ask questions in class, let more students participate in discussions, create a positive atmosphere in class, activate students' thinking, and make their thinking active in the whole learning process. Teachers' persuasion can make students use their knowledge and experience to think and understand problems, find out solutions to problems, and express their ideas in class or in writing.

Listening, speaking, reading, writing and translating are the basic skills of English majors. If we subdivide these five skills, speaking, writing and translation are the output behaviors of language, while listening and reading are the input behaviors of language. Although the training of listening and reading ability plays a very important role in language learning, it is not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal of language learning is to acquire communicative competence. The essence of English teaching is to help students acquire language competence and communicative competence. Therefore, in classroom teaching, teachers should pay attention to inspire and induce students, carefully design some questions according to the teaching content, put forward them in class, let students think, discuss in groups, and then recommend a student from each group to explain their views, which not only cultivates students' expression ability, but also urges students to think positively.

Third, change the teaching concept and cultivate the ability of autonomous learning.

Professor Cheng believes that autonomous learning ability refers to: the internal mechanism that dominates learning is composed of learners' attitudes, abilities and learning strategies; Learners' control over their learning objectives, learning contents, learning methods and learning materials used; Autonomous learning is a learning mode, that is, under the macro control of the overall teaching objectives, under the guidance of teachers, according to their own conditions and needs, learners formulate and complete specific learning objectives. For teachers, to cultivate students' autonomous learning ability is to provide students with autonomous learning space and coordinate the relationship between autonomous learning and the overall educational goals.

Generally speaking, there are several factors that affect the cultivation of English majors' autonomous learning ability: First, students lack learning motivation. Students have just entered the university from high school and have no sense of tension in the past. They pay more attention to how to spend their college life easily, so they lack the motivation to learn and the learning effect is naturally unsatisfactory. Second, students are not interested in the traditional teaching mode. Preaching blindly in English class can't create opportunities to inspire students to think and solve problems independently, which will make students depend on their studies, stifle their thinking space and is not conducive to the improvement of their autonomous learning ability. Third, students' bad study habits. Some students are only satisfied with superficial knowledge when learning English language, and can't think meaningfully about what they have learned, which also affects the cultivation of autonomous learning ability.

To solve the above problems, we should first make students correct their learning attitude, educate them to have good learning motivation and cultivate their interest in learning English. Linking the content of teaching materials with real life can not only cultivate students' ability to integrate theory with practice, but also enable students to generate learning motivation through interest.

The cultivation of autonomous learning ability can only be realized by changing the teaching concept. Encourage students to think positively and practice actively, stimulate students' enthusiasm, initiative and independence in the learning process, return the classroom to students, give students the initiative in learning, let students learn independently, give students enough study time, let students learn independently and create self-study? Atmosphere? , so that students' learning initiative can be given full play.

The ultimate goal of English learning is to improve learners' communicative competence. The strength of communicative competence reflects a person's comprehensive quality. Improving the comprehensive quality of English majors in the basic stage is a systematic project, which requires not only the support of modern educational theory system, but also the change of teachers' and students' concepts and the improvement of the current curriculum system. Only when all parties involved in education actively interact can we achieve the expected results.
