The University of North Carolina, founded in 1789, is the earliest public university in the United States. The University of North Carolina has developed into a huge university system with 16 campuses and 183000 students. After the establishment of the branch school, Gao Qing's original name was changed to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The abbreviation UNC refers to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

The first campus of Chivoluna University in North Carolina was established in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on 1789. This is the first public university in the United States to award degrees and the only university in North Carolina within 136 in history.

From 65438 to 0877, North Carolina began to subsidize other higher education institutions. Gradually, the state added five black universities and one university to train Indians. Other universities have been established to train public education teachers and performing arts talents.

During the Great Depression, the North Carolina Legislative Council looked for ways to cut expenses within the state government. Therefore, after efforts, it merged the then University of North Carolina into the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Green Sboro at 193 1.

The newly merged University of North Carolina operates these three campuses under the leadership of a foundation and a school board.
