Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine was founded in 1924 on the basis of Guangdong College of Chinese Medicine. Guangzhou College of Traditional Chinese Medicine was established on 1956 with the approval of the State Council, and it is one of the first four universities of traditional Chinese medicine in New China. It was renamed Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine on 1995. Formerly directly under the Ministry of Health, it was placed under the management of Guangdong Provincial People's Government in 2000.

20 17 was selected as the national "double first-class" discipline construction university. 20 18 was promoted to be a key construction university of high-level universities in Guangdong province.
