The school, formerly known as Southwest People's Revolutionary University, was founded in 1950, with Marshal Liu Bocheng as the principal. 1953, based on the Department of Political Science and Law of Southwest People's Revolutionary University, the then Law Schools of Chongqing University, Sichuan University, Chongqing University of Finance and Economics, Guizhou University and Yunnan University were merged to formally establish Southwest University of Political Science and Law. Mr. Guo Moruo inscribed the name of the school.
