It is not good to live outside. The most important thing in college is the relationship with roommates. Living outside will lose this part. Other notices and activities can't be notified to you in time, so it's easy to be isolated.

Personal suggestion: stay at school and rent a house when you need it in your junior or senior year.

It is generally impossible to rent apartments for college employees and teachers. But it depends on the school.
