Homans (19 10-) is an American sociologist and one of the representatives of social exchange theory. Born in Boston. 1932 graduated from Harvard university with a bachelor of arts degree and stayed on as a teacher. 1939 ——1941year university lecturer. Served in the US Navy during World War II. 1946 returned to Harvard University and transferred to the Sociology Department. 1953 is professor of sociology, 1967- 1970 is director of sociology. 1963 ——1964, President of the American Social Society. Influenced by structural functionalism, he emphasized the importance of small group research and analyzed the relationship between behavioral variables, such as activities, communication and emotions, which laid the foundation of exchange theory. In his later period, he emphasized the important role of human and human motivation, and thought that the communication between people was fundamentally an exchange process, which reduced sociological research to micro-social psychology research. He regards society as the result of individual action and behavior exchange, and social structure is the collection of individual behavior, so individual behavior should be the highest principle of sociological research. Homans's sociological thought is called behaviorism exchange theory.
