Southwest Jiaotong University was founded in 1896, and was named Shanhaiguan Beiyang Railway Academy, Tangshan Jiaotong University and Tangshan Railway Institute. 1972 moved to Emei, Sichuan, and changed its name to Southwest Jiaotong University. 1986, the expansion of the general school in Chengdu, namely Jiuli Campus, officially opened in September 1989; In 2002, a new campus was built in Xipu, Chengdu. The school has three campuses, Chengdu Jiuli, Chengdu Xipu and Emei, covering an area of about 5,000 mu, forming a school-running pattern of "one school, two places and three campuses". In 2008, marked by the shift of the focus of the school's work, the main campus of the school was moved to Chengdu Xipu Campus, and the function of Chengdu Jiuli Campus was positioned as a national laboratory (preparation) and a postgraduate and continuing education base for major supporting disciplines.
