The origin of China's family dynamic tracking survey
In 2004, when Peking University was designing the second phase of the "985 Project", several social science departments put forward the idea of establishing a national survey database.

On this basis, in order to integrate resources, on July 1 1, 2005, Lin Jianhua, Executive Vice President of Peking University, held a meeting in Xiangshan Hotel attended by experts and principals from various departments of social sciences in Peking University, as well as Professor Zhou Xueguang from Stanford University and Professor Li Zhongqing from the University of Michigan. After a day's discussion, it was reached that Peking University will set up institutions and projects to conduct a family dynamic follow-up survey in China. At that time, it was decided to set up a preparatory group, with Professor Lin Yifu, then director of the China Center for Economic Research of Peking University, as the team leader and Professor Ma Rong, then head of the Department of Sociology of Peking University, as the deputy team leader, and immediately started the preparatory work.

At the beginning of 5438+February 2005, the preparatory group formed the Report on the Establishment of Peking University China Social Investigation Institute and the Follow-up Survey of Chinese Family Dynamics (Draft), which was written by Professor Qiu Zeqi from the Department of Sociology of Peking University.

Professor Ma Rong, then head of the department, called some members of the preparatory group to discuss with Professor Xie Yu. Talking about the investigation institutions and projects under construction in Peking University, Professor Xie Yu introduced the PSID (American Family Income Dynamic Survey) of the University of Michigan, and expressed support for the idea of family follow-up survey in Peking University.

On the basis of collecting opinions from all sides, the preparatory group formally submitted the Report on the Establishment of Social Investigation Institute in China, Peking University and the Follow-up Survey of Chinese Family Dynamics (Draft for Review) to Peking University on March 18, 2006.

Since then, under the auspices of Lin Jianhua, the executive vice president, the Ministry of Social Sciences of Peking University and the preparatory group have been instructed to further discuss and negotiate with the personnel of nine social science departments and other personnel on the functions, authorities, plans and names of the investigation institutions and projects to be established.
