Some departments of the school can be traced back to the original Anhui University, which was founded in Anqing in April 1928, which was the beginning of modern higher education in Anhui Province. Anhui University was established on the basis of Hefei University and some departments of the former (national) Anhui University 1958. In September of the same year, President Mao Zedong personally wrote the name of the school, which is still in use today.
As of 20 14, the school has four campuses and a university science and technology industrial park, covering an area of more than 3,200 mu, with a building area of10.2 million square meters, a total equipment value of 400 million yuan and a collection of more than 3.2 million paper books.
