Qiushi College, the predecessor of Zhejiang University, was founded in 1897. It is one of the earliest new institutions of higher learning founded by the people of China. 1928, named National Zhejiang University. During the Anti-Japanese War, Zhejiang University moved westward, running schools in Zunyi and Meitan of Guizhou for seven years, and moved back to Hangzhou in the autumn of 1946.

1952, when the departments of colleges and universities in China were adjusted, most of the departments in Zhejiang were transferred to brother universities and Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the main parts left in Hangzhou were divided into several single-subject colleges, which later developed into the original Zhejiang University, Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University and Zhejiang Medical University respectively. 1998, four universities with the same roots merged to form the new Zhejiang University.

Zhejiang University is a comprehensive, research-oriented and innovative university with distinctive characteristics and great influence at home and abroad. Its disciplines cover 13 categories, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, art, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management and interdisciplinary subjects. There are 7 departments, 37 specialized colleges (departments) and 13 disciplines.

The school has seven campuses, namely Zijin Port, Yuquan, Xixi, Huajiachi, Zhijiang, Zhoushan and Haining, covering an area of 6,223,440 square meters, and the library has a total collection of 7.87 million books.
