Unit 1

An interesting mistake On a Sunday morning, a police officer saw a man climb down the drain from an open bedroom window. As soon as the man landed, the police officer grabbed his arm. When answering the police officer's question, the man said that his name was Charlie Crane, and he was a truck driver from Nottingham. He explained that he had a nervous breakdown the day before and spent the night in the house where the police officer saw him. That morning, the landlady gave him breakfast and he went on his way. Later he found that he had left 80 pounds under the pillow. He came back and rang the doorbell, but no one answered. Finding the bedroom window still open, he climbed up the drain. The police officer saw him when he left again. Just as the police officer was trying to find out if this was an interesting mistake, a woman shouted from the kitchen window, "Mr. Crane, what are you doing here?" I thought you left an hour ago. "

Dear Dad:

Do you remember the problem that my research team has been trying to solve for some time? The one mentioned in my last letter? Well, we finally found a solution yesterday. This is all because of you. How come? Do you remember the game you used to play with us to encourage us to think laterally, that "what doesn't belong?" One? It all came back to me when we sat around and seemed to be repeating the same old topic for the hundredth time. Obviously, what we need to do is to look at this problem from a new angle. I told this question to other members of the group. After a period of brainstorming, we looked at this question in a brand-new way and found the answer directly. It was always under our noses, but we didn't notice it because we adhered to the old thinking habits. It seems that all the discussions about oranges, tomatoes and strawberries a long time ago were not only interesting, but also good for the brain. So, like us, you should be praised for our success. Thank you very much

Your dear son,

Tom (male name)

Unit 3

Why did I choose to go to college?

When my high school life came to an end, I kept thinking in my mind about whether I should go to college or not. Sometimes I do have some doubts. However, after careful consideration, I finally think it is worthwhile. My main reason is simple. I am eager for knowledge and want to continue studying. After graduating from high school, I became more and more interested in mathematics, physics and chemistry, and I was eager to explore them further. I also choose to go to college because I know that college education will provide me with opportunities for all-round development. I can join music groups, sports and campus organizations. Participating in all kinds of activities helps me to become an all-round person. Another factor is that I realize that in today's world, many occupations need years of professional training. Not having a college education will make it more difficult for you to get an ideal job. With my further study in university, I seem to have more and more reasons to congratulate myself on making the right decision.

Unit 4

In a recent poll conducted by the Town Herald, 72% of the residents surveyed said that the municipal government could do more for the homeless. 65% people say that the city pays too little attention to the needs of blacks and other ethnic minorities. When asked about the suggestion of building more soup kitchens and nursing homes for the homeless and the elderly, 77% thought it was a good idea, 14% thought it was stupid, and 9% didn't comment. 38% people think that crime is the most serious problem facing this city, while 25% and 37% people think that unemployment and pollution are the most serious problems respectively. Vocational training for young people is considered as the best way to reduce crime (63%). After that, in percentage order, citizens' neighborhood patrol (23%), more walking police (10%) and death penalty (4%) were followed.

Unit 5

It was Mother's Day. Susan asked her father and brother to think about what special things they could do for this occasion. Her father came up with an idea to surprise the children's mothers with a barbecue on the first day of the new year. The children agreed that it was a good idea, and they all started to prepare the barbecue. The first thing they have to do is to get the biggest steak they can find. It was already dark when they were ready to make a fire. To their disappointment, there were no coal cakes left last year.

Finally, they had to ask their neighbors for some, disturbing a couple who lived nearby to watch TV.

Sixth unit

One Sunday afternoon, Peter was reading a newspaper when his six-year-old son, Tom, rushed into the room, crying and his left eye was black and blue. "What's the matter? Who hit you in the eye, Tom? " Father asked. "Steve, the big boy in Quail Street ..." The son cried even harder and pointed out. In a rage, Peter jumped down from the armchair, clenched his fist and rushed out. Before Steve said a word, Peter punched him in the face. Steve was unprepared and knocked to the ground. However, he quickly stood up again and hit back so hard that Peter was beaten black and blue. Seeing that he had got his revenge, Steve ran away at once. Peter had to walk home in complete failure. After returning to his room, he sat in an armchair and looked very depressed.

I'll be glad to have dinner with you at seven o'clock on Friday and see Susan again. Dear Mary, you can't imagine how disappointed I am that I can't have dinner with you and see Susan again. Little Tom has a high fever and needs long-term care, so it is impossible for me to go. But thank you very much for your invitation.

Unit 8

How to achieve our life goals?

Just as a sailboat has a definite destination, so we must have a clear goal in life. To succeed in life, one must learn to cultivate his own qualities, such as diligence, persistence, self-confidence and strong willpower. Here, I want to talk about the first two issues in detail. There is no doubt that hard work is the key to success. Take Peter G. Beidler as an example. Professor Beidler chose teaching as his career, and he made great efforts to meet the challenge of this career. Day after day, he stayed up to prepare his lecture, even when his eyes became swollen from lack of sleep. His later success as a teacher was proved by the fact that he was named Professor of the Year in 1983. Obviously, his success has a lot to do with hard work. Persistence is another important factor to achieve life goals. Once we set a goal for ourselves, we can't deviate from our direction until we reach it. Mother in Unit 5 is a case in point. Facing all the challenges in life, she refused to give up. On the contrary, she insisted on improving herself. Finally, she became a reporter for a local newspaper. Obviously, persistence helped her realize her dream.
