Utilitarianism is because of survival. When people have a strong sense of survival, it always seems very utilitarian. Indifference is also to survive and protect yourself from harm. When the fear of injury is more serious or more hurt, it doesn't matter. This is what happens when the social competition is too fierce and people feel insecure.
