The social work major of Xiamen University was founded in 1988, and the first batch of social work undergraduates were officially enrolled in 1994. It is one of the earliest social work majors in China since the reform and opening up. There are 7 teachers in the Department of Social Work, including 3 professors, 2 associate professors and 2 assistant professors. 1 is a member of the MSW Education Steering Committee.
Over the years, the Department of Social Work has paid attention to the combination of social policy research, social work practice research and localization research, and has formed distinctive research directions such as mental health social work, social work for the elderly, social work for teenagers and schools, social work project evaluation, the construction and management of non-profit organizations, and children's behavior and development. The established professional practice base and practice research base have the national demonstration function. The research team actively participates in international academic exchanges and has a certain international influence in the field of social policy and social work.
The Department provides training programs for undergraduate, master and doctoral degrees in social work, and is the first batch of MSW authorized enrollment units in China. Cultivate professionals who establish the value concept of social work, have solid social work theory and knowledge, and master social work methods and skills skillfully. About 20 undergraduates and 40 municipal solid waste students are enrolled every year. Graduates majoring in social work in this department have worked in party and government organs, various enterprises and institutions, colleges and universities, various social service institutions and foundations, and have achieved excellent results and a good reputation in the fields of teaching and research, social services, administration and human resources management.
The main courses include introduction to sociology, introduction to social work, case work, group work, community work, social work management, social policy, human growth and social environment, social psychology, psychological consultation and guidance, social work for the elderly, social work for teenagers, family social work, medical social work, mental health social work, child welfare and social work, career planning and employment consultation, social investigation and research theory and method.
