Wright was named the first shooting guard of American high school students and ranked fourth among the most promising high school students. Selected as the third team of America's best team.
In 2002, Wright was selected for the American Youth Men's Basketball Team and participated in the qualifiers of the World Youth Men's Basketball Championship. In the end, he won the bronze medal with a record of 4 wins-/kloc-0-0. Wright averaged 6.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.4 steals per game. This bronze medal enabled the American young men's basketball team to participate in the 2003 FIBA World Young Men's Basketball Championship. Wright contributed 10 points in the group match against Dominica. Wright contributed seven rebounds in the semi-final defeat to Venezuela.
The University of Arizona, the University of Maryland, the University of Connecticut, the University of North Carolina, the University of Texas and Arizona State University all invited Wright to offer generous scholarships. In the end, Wright chose to join Texas A&M University, play under the coach Melvin Watkins, and chose a coach who was loyal to him for a long time, instead of pursuing his studies later.
