Nankai University is a key university with strong arts and sciences in Tianjin, and one of the national 1 1 key universities recognized by the state. It has 18 national key disciplines of arts and sciences, and is in a leading position in the four disciplines of economy, history, mathematics and chemistry.

Nankai University is generally called "Nanda" in Tianjin. Nankai has branches or research institutes in Tanggu, Shenzhen and Kunming. Chongqing and other places have middle schools named after Nankai formed for historical reasons.
