There are about 1000 staff and about 10000 students, including about 7,500 undergraduates and 2,500 graduate students. Founded in 1947, it is a new university reformed from four pre-war government educational institutions, including Yokohama Institute of Economics, Yokohama Institute of Technology, Kanagawa Normal School and Kanagawa Youth Normal School. Through a series of reorganization of departments and universities, it has developed into a comprehensive university with four departments and five research departments.
Most graduates of Yokohama National University can enter the upper-class enterprises in Japanese society, which makes the school's entrance competition rise every year. As an important education center for the financial industry, the Department of Economics and the Department of Management are very difficult to enter, and they can be called famous families in the capital circle, ranking in the top 20 in Japan for many years.
