Expanding Yangtze University is a comprehensive university with the most comprehensive disciplines among universities in Hubei Province, a key university in Hubei Province, and the "National Education Power Promotion Project" was selected as a university and a "national first-class university" in Hubei Province. It is also the establishment of Hubei Provincial People's Government, China Petroleum and Natural Gas Group Co., Ltd., China Petrochemical Group Co., Ltd., China Offshore Oil Group Co., Ltd., Hubei Provincial People's Government and China Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Approved by the Ministry of Education in April 2003, the school was formed by the merger of Jianghan Petroleum College, Hubei Agricultural College, Jingzhou Normal College and Hubei Medical College of Health Workers.
