West Lake University is a new institution of higher learning sponsored by social forces and supported by the state. Formerly known as Zhejiang West Lake Institute of Advanced Studies, it was founded by Shi, Chen Shiyi, Pan Jianwei, Rao Yi and others, and was officially approved by the Ministry of Education on February 18, 2008.

According to the introduction of official website of West Lake University in June, 2020, the school focuses on cultivating top-notch innovative compound graduate students with the orientation of improving the international competitiveness of cutting-edge science and technology and adapting to the national strategic needs. It will adopt flexible postgraduate selection methods and an interdisciplinary training plan to maximize students' creativity and establish a training system for young scientists.

In the early stage, the school gives priority to the construction of three disciplines: medicine, science and engineering, and plans to set up 13 first-class disciplines, including biology, basic medicine, biomedical engineering, pharmacy, physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer science and technology, electronic science and technology, optical engineering, material science and engineering, mechanical engineering and environmental science and engineering.
