Tibet University for Nationalities, located in Xianyang City, Shaanxi Province, was established with the approval of the Xizang Autonomous Region Municipal People's Government and the State Ethnic and Religious Affairs Committee. It was selected in the first phase of the basic capacity building project for universities in the central and western regions, a pilot unit of the excellent doctoral education training program of the Ministry of Education, a counterpart support university of East China Normal University, and a national demonstration university for deepening the reform of innovation and entrepreneurship education. ?

This school is the first institution of higher learning established by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China in China for Tibet after the peaceful liberation of Tibet. Formerly known as "Tibet Public School", the Central Committee was founded in 1957, and the school started in 1958. On April 30th, 1965, it was renamed "Tibet Institute for Nationalities" with the approval of the State Council. On April 20 15, it was renamed "Tibet University for Nationalities" with the approval of the Ministry of Education.
