The school was founded in 1956, and moved to Chongqing from Shanghai First Medical College (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University). Its predecessor was Chongqing Medical College, and 1985 was renamed Chongqing Medical University.
The school is the first batch of units with the right to award doctoral and master's degrees approved by the State Council Academic Degrees Committee and the first batch of demonstration bases for studying in China approved by the Ministry of Education.
