The school's predecessor was the German Medical College founded by paulun erich in 1907. 1908 was renamed Tongji Wende yiguang; 19 12, together with Tongji German Engineering School, is called Tongji German Medical Engineering School; Tongji University was officially named1923; 1927 National Tongji University, one of the seven earliest national universities in China.

There are 22 professors in Tongji University who are the chief scientists of the "973 Plan" project (including major scientific research projects). Among them, "Key Technologies for Seismic Design of Long-span and High-pier Bridges" won the first prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2009, "Molecular Genetics and Cell Electrophysiology Research of Atrial Fibrillation" and "Fine Theory of Flutter and Buffeting of Extra-large Bridges" won the second prize of the National Natural Science Award in 2005 and 20 10 respectively.
At the 20 18 National Science and Technology Awards Conference, the achievements of seven scientific research projects in our school won the National Science and Technology Award.
