Northwest University for Nationalities is located in Lanzhou City, Gansu Province. It is a full-time undergraduate college directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission of People's Republic of China (PRC), which is jointly established by the State Ethnic Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Education, China Academy of Sciences and Gansu Province.

As of May 2023, the school has Northwest Xincun Campus and Yuzhong Campus, with affiliated hospitals, affiliated middle schools, affiliated primary schools and affiliated kindergartens, with a total campus area of 1776 mu and a total construction area of 770,000 square meters. The library has more than 4.08 million books (including e-books), and the total value of teaching and research instruments and equipment is about 500 million yuan.

There are 25 teaching and research units and 73 undergraduate majors; Post-Doctoral Research Center 1 one, 2 first-level disciplines authorized by doctoral degrees, 3 first-level disciplines authorized by two disciplines, 1 first-level disciplines authorized by master's degrees 16, two disciplines master's degrees 10, 2 interdisciplinary disciplines authorized by master's degrees, and master's degree authorized categories 13. There are more than 30,000 teachers and students.

The school was awarded the honorary title of "National Model Collective of National Unity and Progress" by the State Council twice, and was awarded the title of "Excellent Unit of National College Student Volunteers' Summer Social Practice Activities in the Countryside" by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League many times, and won the title of "Advanced Collective for Poverty Alleviation in Gansu Province".
