The school, formerly known as Chengdu Institute of Telecommunications Engineering, was formed by the merger of Jiaotong University (now Shanghai Jiaotong University and Xi Jiaotong University), Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University) and South China University of Technology (now South China University of Technology). 1956. 1960 is listed as a national key institution of higher learning; 196 1 was identified as one of the seven national defense industrial colleges.
