Southern Medical University, formerly known as the First Military Medical University of Chinese People's Liberation Army, was founded in 195 1, 1979 and was designated as a national key university. In August 2004, it was transferred to Guangdong Province as a whole and renamed Southern Medical University. The school is the only medical college among the first five high-level universities in Guangdong Province, the first medical college set up by "ministries and commissions" in China, one of the first eight universities in China that offer eight-year clinical medicine majors (undergraduate and doctoral), and the first pilot universities in China that educate and train excellent doctors and excellent doctors (Chinese medicine).

There are 5 national key and cultivation disciplines, 6 key disciplines in state administration of traditional chinese medicine and 10 in Guangdong. 10 discipline ranks among the top in ESI 1‰, and clinical medicine ranks among the top in ESI 1‰, ranking 52nd in China. At present, there are 10 first-class disciplines authorized by doctor's degree, 16 first-class disciplines authorized by master's degree, 2 categories authorized by doctor's degree, 14 categories authorized by master's degree and 8 post-doctoral research stations, forming a discipline system with medicine as the main body and the coordinated development of science, engineering, law, management and teaching.
